Tetramethylsilane (TMS) is the simplest tetralkylsilane—a colorless, volatile liquid with a characteristic “organometallic” odor. It is chemically stable, insoluble in water, and soluble in most organic solvents. In nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, TMS is widely used as an internal standard for chemical shift. Chemical shift is a relative value, generally with TMS as the reference, meaning that the chemical shift of TMS is 0 ppm. The protons in TMS are subject to strong shielding effects, requiring a relatively strong external magnetic field; as a result, it is generally difficult for any compound to exceed this value.
