It has a distinctive phenolic aroma, combined with a complex bouquet of smoky, spicy, medicinal, and meaty notes. It occurs naturally in guaiac resin, wood smoke, and certain plant essential oils.
Key Applications
1. Fragrance Industry: It serves as a key raw material for the synthesis of vanillin, synthetic musk, and eugenol, and can also be used to formulate coffee, vanilla, smoky, and tobacco-based flavorings.
2. Pharmaceutical Sector: Used in the synthesis of expectorants such as calcium guaiacol sulfonate and guaiac glycerol ether; it may also serve as a topical preservative and an adjunct treatment for indigestion.
3. Other Applications: Added in small quantities to cosmetics as a phenolic antioxidant; it may also be used as an analytical reagent for testing copper, hydrogen cyanide, and nitrites.
Storage Requirements
Store in a sealed container, protected from light, in a cool, dry place at 2–8°C. This substance is sensitive to air and light; it must be kept away from strong oxidizing agents and stored and transported in accordance with regulations for toxic substances to prevent oxidation and discoloration caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight.
