Chloromethyltrimethylsilane can be converted into the corresponding lithium compound using sec-butyllithium; the resulting compound readily reacts with aldehydes and ketones to form a,b-epoxymethylsilane, which is an important intermediate in the preparation of many functional compounds listed in Chemicalbook. For example, reaction with formic acid yields formate enol esters in high yields. Chloromethyltrimethylsilane is also a reagent for the preparation of trimethylsilyl methyl isocyanate.
