Applications
1. Used as a reagent in chromatographic analysis and in organic synthesis
2. 1,4-Butanediol has a wide range of applications. In the United States and Western Europe, more than half of its production is used to manufacture tetrahydrofuran, followed by γ-butyrolactone and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), the latter being a rapidly developing engineering plastic; 1,4-Butanediol is used as a chain extender and polyester raw material in the production of polyurethane elastomers and flexible polyurethane foams; esters derived from 1,4-butanediol serve as effective plasticizers for cellulose, polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylates, and polyesters. 1,4-Butanediol possesses good moisture-absorbing and plasticizing properties and can be used as a gelatin softener and water-absorbing agent, as well as a treatment agent for cellophane and other uncoated papers. It can also be used to prepare N-methylpyrrolidone, N-vinylpyrrolidone, and other pyrrolidone derivatives; it is also used in the production of vitamin B6, pesticides, and herbicides, as well as in various industrial processes as a solvent, plasticizer, lubricant, humectant, softener, adhesive, and brightener in the electroplating industry.
3. Reagent for chemical analysis; used as a stationary phase in gas chromatography. Used as a solvent, non-toxic antifreeze, food emulsifier, humectant, and in organic synthesis. Used in the pharmaceutical and food industries.
4. Solvent. Wetting agent. Intermediate for plasticizers. Cross-linking agent for the manufacture of high-resilience polyurethane elastomers. Organic synthesis. Used in the manufacture of tetrahydrofuran.
